Ahmed’s talent was evident early on and he quickly established himself as one of the best players in the country’s youth system. He was named to the FIFA U-17 World Cup squad in 1984 and went on to play in the international tournament three times before returning to his hometown club Al Duhail.
In 1987, Ahmed joined Al Duhail on loan from Al Thumam. He spent four years with the club and made a significant impact on the team, scoring over 100 goals in total. His performances earned him a spot on the national team roster and he played in the 1988 FIFA World Cup where Qatar lost to eventual champions Brazil.
After the tournament, Ahmed returned to Al Duhail and continued to contribute to the club. In 1992, he was appointed as the club’s head coach and led them to their first-ever title win. He also helped the club qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1998 FIFA Confederations Cup.
